Iconography

See original street signs below. Why is it always the ‘female’ icon walking with the kids? Why do the men always walk alone or do construction work? How would the escape route look for someone using a wheelchair?

Signs that we see everyday in the city and have a common understanding of what they tell us but what stereotypes do they reproduce subconsciously? The universality of the male figure is reinforced but the ‘female’ only existing when specified (i.e. through the addition of a skirt).

Originals featured here. Adaptations seen in first images. Thank you to the skill of Sahra Huby.
